Head Coach: Joy Scruggs
 
As Head Coach Joy Scruggs extends her tenure at E&H to 25 seasons, the women’s basketball program at Emory & Henry continues its tradition of success. Over the first three seasons in the 2000 decade, the Wasps averaged 20 wins per season and battled throughout each season for first place in the conference regular season standings. During this string, Scruggs was twice named the ODAC Coach of the Year. In 2002, the leagues’ coaches tabbed her after leading E&H to a school record 22-5 record while recording her 300th career victory. For the 2003 season, she was honored with the award after leading her team to a second place regular season finish despite graduating two seniors who had combined for a phenomenal 24 school records in their four year careers. She also earned Coach of the Year honors in 1984 when E&H recorded a 20-6 season. The Wasps have claimed one conference tournament championship (1988).

Along with her coaching duties at Emory & Henry, Scruggs has also coached internationally with Athletes in Action. During the summers of 1989 and 1990, she coached AIA women’s basketball team that toured in Ecuador and participated in Christian witness.

Scruggs is also involved in the community. Since its inception in 1992, she has been a member of Emory Service Project, spending a part of each summer participating in housing repair in southwest Virginia as one of the group’s roofing specialists. She is also active in the Abingdon Rotary Club, and the Meadowview United Methodist Church.

A graduate of the University of Tennessee, Scruggs holds B.S. and M.S. degrees. While at Tennessee, she played basketball for the Lady Vols and received a number of undergraduate academic honors.
