Emory & Henry College
2005-2006 Women's Basketball Preview

The 2005-2006 Emory & Henry Women’s Basketball team looks for another great year after an outstanding finish to the 2004-2005 season with an overall record of 16-11 and a great conference tournament. Coach Joy Scruggs enters her 25th year as the head coach. Scruggs looks to leadership of three seniors to replace graduates Amy Hensley (8.1 ppg, 78% FT, 30-3’s) and Shannon Brown (7.4 ppg, 52 steals).

A talented senior class will lead the Wasps onto the hardwood floor this season. Leading the way will be Brooke Barker and Kate Childress; both led the team in scoring with an average of 12.7 points per game. Statistically, both Barker (5.3 rpg, 35-3’s, 2.6 apg) and Childress (6.1 rpg, 3.8 apg, 27-3’s) are relatively equal across the board and should be the strength of the Wasps’ backcourt. Childress was named 2nd team all ODAC and Barker received honorable mention honors last season.

Other key returnees are sophomore Katherine Brandt (6.3 ppg, 5.4 rpg), who saw plenty of playing time, and senior Whitney Henderson (4 ppg, 4.1 rpg), who will make her presence known again this season. Henderson’s consistency and presence is key to the Wasps’ success.

Also seeing the court will be returning letter winners Julina Pyanoe, Lauren Habel, Kiyett Brown, and Katie Klik. The Wasps also look for strong play from a solid class of first year players to add to the team’s depth.

The Wasps, with an experienced group of veteran players and a talented group of newcomers, look again to be contenders for the ODAC Championship.
